How to install a wrought iron driveway gate
A practical field sequence for setting posts, hanging a swing gate and checking alignment.
What you need
- Two support posts (steel or set concrete)
- Gate leaf with hinges
- Post hinges and lag screws
- Level and measuring tape
- Concrete mix (if setting new posts)
Steps

Confirm opening and post centres
Measure the clear opening and the distance between the two supporting posts. The gate leaf should be 10–20 mm narrower than the clear opening to allow swing clearance.

Set or verify the posts
Posts must be plumb and set below the frost line (or in cured concrete). Check both posts are at the same height and the centres match the hinge template.

Attach the hinges
Bolt the post-side hinges first, then offer the gate leaf up and fix the leaf-side straps. Use a temporary support so the leaf hangs true.

Hang and align the leaf
With the leaf hanging, check the gap is even top and bottom. Adjust hinge shims until the leaf swings freely without dragging.

Fit latch and test
Install the receiving latch on the opposite post, test open/close five times, then tighten all fixings to final torque.

Touch up and protect
Any bare steel from drilling should be primed or powder-coated. For coastal sites, confirm a hot-dip galvanized or marine coating was specified.
